A Dramatic Season Finale

Shane van Gisbergen's 2018 season marked the competitive debut of the new Holden ZB Commodore, and he gave it a dream introduction by sweeping both races at the Adelaide 500. Driving the #97 Red Bull Holden Racing Team entry, van Gisbergen emerged as Scott McLaughlin's main championship challenger, producing the fearless overtaking, determination and outright speed that had become his trademark. He claimed seven race victories, including two wins on home soil at Pukekohe, keeping the title battle alive until the final round in Newcastle.

The season reached a dramatic climax on Saturday in Newcastle, when van Gisbergen passed a fuel-saving McLaughlin just two corners from the finish to claim a memorable victory. Overnight, however, a 25-second penalty for a pit-stop infringement dropped him to fifth and dealt a major blow to his title hopes. Van Gisbergen ultimately finished runner-up in the Drivers' Championship, but his 2018 campaign showcased his speed and resilience, from delivering the ZB Commodore a winning debut to taking the championship fight all the way to the final weekend.
